Review of Susan Sigge, June 14, 2010

I know it sounds cliche to say this, but having Susan Sigge as a flute teacher changed my life. I started taking lessons with her around the time I knew I wanted to be serious about the flute. I was shy, nervous, and did not know what to expect. She was so in tune with my feelings from the very beginning and she slowly helped me come out of my shell. As we worked on playing the flute, we also worked on overcoming my nerves which was a skill that helped me in my performing and in my everyday life. She would give me assignments not only to practice my exercises, but to "do something outgoing" and I would report on it each week. She even had me skip across the parking lot once to help me overcome my fear of public attention. During my 6 years of lessons with Susan, she provided me with numerous performing opportunities that I now view as priceless. She helped me every step of the way as I auditioned to be a flute major in college and I know I owe my acceptance into the Brigham Young University School of Music to her. I also have been awarded scholarships and teaching positions because of the experience she helped me get. Now I am starting my graduate degree in flute performance and I constantly think of my lessons with Susan as the foundation of my future musical career.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Susan Sigge for many years, and have heard her play many times, and observe her teaching style with a large group of flutists. Susan has a gift for teaching - she makes it look effortless. Her style is gentle but firm, and she draws out the best in her students, by example and encouragement.
Indeed, Susan has by osmosis taught me some skills in other seemingly unrelated areas - using the same ethic with which she approaches her music - discipline, practise, excellent aesthetics and lifelong learning.

It was also good for me to have Susan teaching me because it was fun for me to go to my lessons. Even though my past teachers were good, there were some days when I didn’t look forward to going to the lessons, or days when I didn’t prepare for lessons since I wasn’t motivated enough… and I know that’s not their fault, but I also know that each lesson I had with Susan I went in looking forward to it and left happy and left feeling like I had really learned something. It was nice being motivated again with music and having fun in the process. I had to get ready for an audition in a short period of time and I was accepted to the school I applied to and I know my lessons helped me with having a successful audition.

Review of Susan Sigge, December 08, 2008

Susan had taught my son for over 8 years. When he started with her he was a shy, 11 year old beginner flutist. Over the years she used her considerable teaching skills and instructive insights to help him become a confident, talented performer. He was first chair in his high school band, second chair in County Honor Band, participated in and won awards in many scholarship competitions, was invited to perform in Master classes, like the Galway Master class that was held the summer of 2007, and passed the Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit exams that are given each year. None of this would have been accomplished without Susan's tireless dedication to teaching my son and her other students, students who were an inspiration to my son when he first started, students who developed into such fine musicians that they chose music as a major in college. Susan's not only a great teacher, she's a powerful role model, she passes on her considerable love for the flute, and if your lucky you can hear her play in local venue's, she's a very accomplished flutist herself.

Review of Susan Sigge, November 24, 2008

Susan Sigge is an excellent flute teacher and music educator in general. I started taking lessons with her my senior year of high school and continued for a year. Not only did she improve my flute playing and technique, she also improved my overall musicality. Her approach and teaching style is superb and very easy to follow. Without having Susan as my teacher, I wouldn't have been able to be so successful in my flute playing and other musical activities.
