I studied music at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. As a student of the world famous jazz program, I got a chance to learn from jazz legends including Kenny Burrell, Rufus Reid, Vic Juris, Steve Wilson, Gary Smulyan, Harold Mabern, John Riley, Horacee Arnold, as well as studying classical saxophone with the New York Philharmonic's David Demsey. I also studied privately with Lee Konitz and Rick Margitza. After graduating in 1998, I moved to New York City, and played with many great musicians including Marc Copland, Jeff Hirshfield, Reid Anderson, Ben Monder, Vic Juris, Scott Mclemore, Doug Weiss, Jonathan Blake, Michael Kane, Gary Wang, Jacob Sacks and countless others.
In 2001, I moved to Portland where I quickly became part of the vibrant jazz scene, performing with Bill Athens, Chris Mosely, David Freisen, Alan Jones, Charlie Doggett, John Gross, Randy Porter, Rebecca Kilgore, Mel Brown, Tom Waekling, Dave Captien, Greg Goebel, Dan Balmer, and many other local jazz luminaries.I have also recorded with Randy Porter, Peter Erskine, Larry Grenadier, Darek Oles, Chris Mosely, Bill Athens, The Marcus Reynolds and Farnell Newton Quintet, Tim Metz and Jeff Akire.
I've been teaching lessons on saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano for over a decade. I have had students from ages five to seventy-five. I bring years of varied professional experience into each lesson. I give each of my students a well rounded practice routine enabling you to improve in the most efficient way possible. You'll learn theory, ear-training, transcription, technique, tone production, sight-reading as well as a respect for all styles of music.
"Tim has a great style of teaching which makes it fun to improve on your instrument. By assigning lessons that contain every aspect of music,
including scales/music theory, tone quality, transcribing, and etudes and technical excercises that help to improve your ability on your particular instrument, Tim is able to turn each lesson into a relaxed, fun environment that still focuses on music. During my studies with Tim, I learned a lot about music, and I learned a lot about myself. I will carry the lessons I learned about music and work ethic with me for years to come."
Matt Faunt, Student 2001-2006
"Tim is such a great teacher. My son learned an amazing amount of information from him. The one on one teaching is priceless.."
