STYLE KOGA RYU NINJUTSU
Koga Ryu Ninjutsu is an all inclusive martial art which combines the best aspects of self-defense with a high level of physical conditioning and mental discipline. Ninjutsu is an ancient style which originated in Japan over a thousand years ago. The very nature of an ancient system like this one is that its longevity is a testament to its effectiveness. Something that has endured the test of time works!
INSTRUCTION
A good school is only as good as the instructors. Our teaching methods are based on the philosophy of "individual attention within a group environment." The advantage to this method is that each student receives personal attention while also learning to work within a group environment. This philosophy is especially important in martial arts training because people learn at different rates.
By addressing students on a personal level, not only do they learn better, but they also feel better about their progress, and themselves. This type of instruction is more time consuming and requires a dedicated effort from the teacher, but we feel the results are well worth it.
CURRICULUM
The Ninjutsu program consists of: physical exercises to improve stamina, strength and coordination; techniques of unarmed self defense; the use of traditional and everyday objects for self defense; how to fall and roll without injury; gymnastic skills; the history and tradition of the martial arts and mental exercises to improve awareness, concentration and discipline.
The Woodhaven Martial Arts School offers beginner to advanced classes for men, women and children, six days a week. Students are encouraged to participate in every class that is offered within their rank level. In addition to regular training, students are given the opportunity to participate in seminars, demonstrations, competitions and community events.
RANK AND TESTING
The Woodhaven Martial Arts School uses the traditional Japanese rank system of kyu (class) and dan (step) ranks. Kyu levels are indicated by the following colored belts: white belt (rokkyu), yellow belt (gokyu), green belt (yonkyu), blue belt (sankyu), purple belt (nikyu), brown belt (ikkyu), and black belt ranks (dan levels). Upon enrollment, students receive a "beginner uniform" which consists of school sweat pants and a t-shirt. In our system, a white belt is considered to have basic martial arts knowledge, thus beginners do not start out with a white belt. The first promotion is to white belt and at that time students will be given their first gi (traditional uniform) and belt.
It is important to understand that the main purpose of the different colored belts is so the instructor can keep track of what level each student is at. We prefer that students do not ask when they will be tested, nor should parents ask when their child will be tested. The emphasis should be less on rank and more on knowledge. When a student has acquired the necessary skills for their next belt rank they will be promoted. This is quite different from other schools where promotions are based on time enrolled. In our school, promotions are based strictly on attendance, knowledge, attitude and ability. No promotion is ever a gift at the Woodhaven Martial Arts School... each belt is earned.
TUITION
We believe an important consideration when choosing a martial arts school is...are you getting complete training for your money? Our school combines an outstanding curriculum with affordable monthly tuition and no contracts or hidden charges. Family discounts and group rates are available as well.
We utilize a monthly payment system. We feel that this is the most flexible and convenient method for our students. Tuition payments are due on the first of each month. (Please note that once enrolled, if a student chooses to take time off during a month they are still obligated to pay that months tuition.)
