Why I Resisted TeachStreet

Posted by Ruth at Oranda Inc on November 15, 2009

From the moment TeachStreet launched in San Francisco, I have revisited the site at least once a month to see genius at work. So, you ask, why have I included my resistence in the title of this article?
I had been a class taking junkie taking everything from 'how to teach yoga to kids' to feng shui when in September of 2008, I came up with a great idea...

Cliff's Approach to Teaching

Posted by Clifford Brooks on October 30, 2009

I use teaching as a learning tool. A new student is like an empty painter's canvas. Slowly, as time goes by, little details start  to appear concerning the way he or she learns .
My students become my teacher, showing...

Martial Artist or Martialist

Posted by Je du too School of Martial Arts on October 16, 2009

Years ago, the term "martial artist" meant an individual who studied serious martial arts: arts whose purpose was totally self-protection, even to the exclusion of martial sports and martial ways.  Today, however, "martial artist" has come to include all who study anything "martial" including the 13-year old black belt from Karate-mart.  Because of this I no longer wished to identify myself a martial artist.  Then I came across Phil Elmore's web site, The...

My Story

My Story
Team in Training Marathon

It all started with the decision to run a marathon.  That's how I ended up in this exact position at 11:45am on this Monday morning.  Here's my story.
Before I ever decided to run a marathon, I had a passion for teaching.  When I was younger, I would go into the pantry of my house and pretend to teach invisible students about the food featured in various cookbooks.  Macaroni and cheese was my favorite food to teach because it was (and still is) my favorite food on earth.  Though this is just a random example, it shows how teaching has always been in my life.  My mom is a teacher; my dad is a...

    • I enjoyed your description of teaching invisible students how to make macaroni and cheese. When I was a kid, I used cardboard boxes to set up my imaginary classrooms. I'd pretend those little globe-shaped pencil sharpeners were real globes...

Teaching Technique Legacy

Posted by The William Lambert on April 13, 2009

Teaching Technique - Legacy
BY DEFINITION: Something handed down from an ancestor or a predecessor or from the past
How do you want your students to remember you?
If you are walking in a local mall and one of your former students sees you then runs to give you a hug and a thank you, would that make you happy. If you overheard one of your students saying “she is the best teacher I ever had”, How would that make you feel?
What if they did not remember your name? What if they did not even remember who you were at all?
DO YOU CARE?
Are you concerned about the concept of legacy at all? My guess is you haven’t really thought very much about it.
THINK ABOUT IT.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be remembered fondly?Wouldn’t it be nice to be some student’s favorite teacher?
My first day of school...

Five Teaching Tips from a Voice Lessons Teacher

Posted by Janet Rayor on February 17, 2009

I come from a teaching family. Mom taught middle schoolers and their teachers, and my sisters, Diane and Linda, are university professors teaching classics and spider biology respectively. Okay, it is an odd family. When I was seven, I was grading mom’s quizes for her middle schoolers. At ten, I was reading the Psychology Today magazines laying around the house. Somehow despite or because of this, I love to teach!
Although I teach voice lessons, the following five tips can be applied with success to teaching various skills and subjects. The following have helped my students get lead roles in school musicals, stop losing their voices, feel confident, and win early admission to university music departments. Nice.

1) Do it wrong!

If you don’t know how to do it wrong, you cannot with awareness do it right. Once I get a student clear on breathing or focusing their voice correctly, I have them go back and forth between doing it correctly and doing it incorrectly. This builds independence and inner knowing.

This translates easily to any physical skill, but can also be applied to tricky foreign language conventions. Why wait for a test to learn from your mistakes. Consciousness drills in knowledge and skill.

2) Exaggerate the habit. . .then release.

People usually have bad habits and goofy ideas of how to perform a skill. With voice, they have often been practicing some odd tensions for all of...
