Review of Violin Lessons (Classical, Bluegrass, Jazz), June 10, 2009

I am a 55-year old adult starting to learn violin/fiddle. I have played guitar for a few years and wanted to learn to play fiddle music. What I am slowly learning is that a violin is an instrument made up of more than multiple parts...there is the violin itself (which doesn't have frets to help with fingering), a bow, and the player (both bowing and fingering the strings); it is like trying to rub your head and belly at the same time while walking backwards whistling a tune. And all four must work together in perfect unison. I have only been taking lessons for a couple of weeks, so I am not very far down the path, but I am starting to make more than just cat scratching on the violin. It's fun to hear the progress even just being able to play scales better this week than last week.

I would highly recommend Tim to anyone trying to learn violin or fiddle.

I am an adult student, and I have a pretty busy schedule. The best thing I get from Tim's instruction is the guidance I need that goes beyond the class session; frank advice on what violin may be a good choice, why a good bow matters, etc.
I also appreciate his patience - he never seems to rush, although by the end of the session, I have picked up quite a bit.
