Beautiful Degradation with Progressive CSS

Zurb-esque button

As I've taken tenure as the designer and web developer here at TeachStreet, I've been focused on a progressive approach to the technical end of web design.
When I started designing web sites in the late 90s, everyone seemed entirely focused on pixel-perfect design across every browser. Quite frankly, that's damn near impossible. It's hard enough in traditional print design to get things like colour correct, and that's ink and paper. Getting "perfection" in web design, especially in those days before web standards, is like printing the same design on copy paper, airmail paper, newspaper, and silly putty, and expecting it to look exactly the same.
So what does that mean? It means you have two choices: pull out your hair in frustration, hacking away the midnight hours until you figure out how to make IE7 render your code just like Safari or Firefox does; or you can follow the web standards, including the new ones, and be rewarded as browsers move toward consistency. The second choice may seem a bit crazy, and a bit obscene to usability purists who think I'm saying "if the site is broke, it's YOUR fault." Not at all: do it right, but do it smart. If the visual perfection is achievable in the modern browsers, but you lose a little of the "ooo! shiny!" slickness in older browsers, give the user what their browser can handle, without hindering the usability. This is beautiful degradation.
Okay, so that may seem great in theory, but doesn't that just sound like a sloppy version of the midnight hours of hacking I mentioned above? Well, no, because there have been a few new handy helpers developed...

7 Roles Your Website Can Fulfill In Your Business

Posted by BHopkins on August 18, 2009

Websites have now become a necessary component for a business if they want to give themselves credibility.  What most business owners miss out on however is that they don’t really know just what their web site can do for them because they usually have one because everyone else has one.  If the goal is to just keep up with the Jones’, then as a business owner, you are potentially leaving money on the table because you are not making the best use of your web presence.  To make the best use of your web presence, you will want to understand the 7 roles your web site can have in your business.
1)    Sales – Your website can be your automated sales person.  It can perform the e-commerce duties of collecting payments, depositing the money into your bank account and automated customer follow-up.
2)    Marketing – Your web presence can keep your business in front of your target market and it can also keep your business message fresh in the minds of...

Optimizing iPhoto

Posted by iAlicia on July 02, 2009

Now that summer’s here and you’re taking a zillion pictures while you’re on vacation, here are a couple tips you can use to keep your iPhoto zinging.
Item Counts
If you’re on a G4 or other pre-Intel Mac, you may find the Library achingly slow.  The culprit may be the little numbers in the ovals on each folder telling you how many pictures are inside.
But while handy, constantly counting your pictures slows down the program, to the point that you may think it’s crashed.
If you find this slowdown while modifying your photos, Go into iPhotoàPreferences. Under the General...

    • I just installed iPhoto 2009 on my Macbook and it lost all my albums (or at least didn't keep them). So I'm fixing on just cleaning it out. Great timing for this post. Maybe adding photos for a slideshow of the steps would be cool on this article. Screenshots?

Even guys need make-up on TV!

Posted by Christine Mahoney on March 05, 2009

One of the hardest challenges that I tackle, as a media coach, is convincing men that, yes, they really do need some make-up, if they plan to appear on TV!I know, it's hard for guys to cruise into the MAC (make-up, not computer!) store and ask for the latest tips in blush application... but some basic skin prep is...

    • Thanks a lot for the advice. I was with you on the lip balm and oil blotting paper, but the brow tweeze -- you lost me there. :) The next time I get in front of the camera for anything, I'll be sure to remember these tips. Cheers!
