I'm really glad I learned how to do Hot Yoga

What was the best part about learning hot yoga?
The best part about hot yoga is how you feel after the session is over. I am by no means a regular yogi, in fact hot yoga was my first exposure to anything yoga related. The first thing you notice about hot yoga is the extreme heat and humidity. There is no escaping the fact that you will be sweating alot during your 90 minutes of hot yoga. My body was twisted, turned, and bent in ways I never thought possible. Despite the extreme heat and body manipulation you leave the yoga studio feeling rejuvenated, skin feeling silky smooth, standing tall from a corrected posture, and a great sense of accomplishment.

What was the most difficult part?
The first time doing hot yoga was the most difficult for me. I have experienced hot and humid climates before but usually in those cases I run into the refuge of a frosty A/C room. The 98 degree yoga studio isn't too bad at first but after a couple minutes of lying on my mat it dawns on me that I will be stuck in this climate for 90 whole minutes. There are no clocks in the room so your mind has no frame of reference of how much longer it needs to endure the heat. This is the first difficult part that you have to overcome; mentally pushing yourself to endure the heat. The second part that was difficult for me was to overcome the smell of the yoga studio. I am not too sure if all hot yoga studios are like this, but the one I went to had carpet floors. Every day hundreds of people are sweating on those carpets and the musty smell reflects a musty odor of a sweaty gym bag that has been neglected for several months.

What advice would you give someone who's interested in hot yoga?
- Give it a shot! Lots of hot yoga studios offer great introductory prices to see if it is something that you will like.
- Drink lots of water beforehand. You'll be sweating alot make sure you are well hydrated before class.
- Take it slow and listen to your body. Working out in 90 plus degree temperature isn't natural for your body. Give your body time to adjust and take breaks if you need.
