Yoga's Secret

Posted by Janis Desmond RYT on June 26, 2009

Actually, it’s no secret that yoga leads to transformation. You’d think it was a secret, if you looked at most Yoga Magazine covers, with pictures of poses that you know you can’t do & may never do & have no interest in doing & shouldn’t be doing from a description in a magazine anyway.

Swami Rama describes yoga as “the science of self discovery” – the ‘self’ would more appropriately represented as the “Self” or the “SELF” with a Om. That which is the essential person that you are, that has nothing to do with the external identifications that people have tagged you with - or the labels you’ve taken on – wife, brother, nurse, tri-athlete, or even yogi. The “Self” that he is referencing is in the soul, deep in your heart, rooted in your bones – it is that which is your true core, the essence of your being.

Yoga is not a form of exercise – ancient yogi’s were not concerned with being ‘fit’ or having a strong core. If you think about it even briefly, you’ll know how silly that is. That’s not to say that doing yoga as exercise is bad or wrong, it’s totally fine – it’s just not going to provide transformation.

I was joking with someone the other day “Transformation? who the hell wants that?” –  it’s true, that not everyone does. The question is, do you want it?

To the devoted practitioner who is truly interested in transformation, yoga has much to offer you, if you are so inclined. You must do the work; you must be ready to do a little yoga everyday & more…….

Another secret – Tantra is not about sex…..
