3 Ways Yoga is Applicable to Everyday Life
Posted by Kat Lenhart on June 19, 2009
It's not just that class that's in your schedule from 5:30-7:00 PM on Thursday evenings. Yoga - in all of its different forms - is applicable to everyday life. It's about the mindset and lifestyle of yoga, not the stretching exercises that may appear to be what it's all about.
The "inner science" of yoga can help you breathe better.
You may not know this, but many people do not breathe to their fullest capacity! One observer of this was Alexander, who developed his own theory of "respiratory rehabilitation," commonly known as the Alexander Technique. Yoga's "inner science" focuses on breathing techniques that you can use at work, home, or riding the bus. It's a simple way to not only improve your lung capacity, but aid in muscle relaxation and lowered blood pressure as well.
It's all about balance.
Yoga is all about the healing of body, mind, and spirit through the principles of harmonious, balanced living - and isn't that what we're all looking for? A person that balances us out, a job that can support the balance of work and home, etc...
Yoga helps you do what you do better.
Seems too simple to be true. Yoga helps us to be more focused and productive - and sometimes, improves skill level of the given activity. Take singing, for example... yoga excercises abdominal muscles that aid in breath support. Or art... yoga inspires creativity and balance that supports new ideas and experiences. Even office work... a journalist can relax more easily when deadlines are approaching.
There is no doubt that yoga is applicable across the board. Check out yoga listings on TeachStreet and find a class!
