How to lay in Savasana (corpse pose)

Posted by Natala on February 12, 2009

The corpse pose is a simple yoga pose that helps with relaxation. It's one of my favorites -- not only because you just have to lie down -- but because it helps me to clear my head.

To do this pose, you'll need:
    * A quiet space
    * Yoga mat or towel
    * 5-15 minutes

Here are the step-by-step instructions:

(1)  Find a nice quite space and give yourself at least 15 minutes to do nothing more than relax. This is the hardest part - I promise!

(2) Start in a straight sitting pose with your legs fully extended in front of you.

(3) Slowly roll back onto the floor so that your back is forming a straight line with your legs

(4) Move your feet so that they are a little wider than your hips. Relax your arms so that they are laying naturally at your side. Face your palms up towards the ceiling.

(5) Work to breath in slow, natural, conscious breaths.

(6) Exhale and relax fully - sinking into the ground with each exhalation. Melt your body into the ground and let go of the tension. Consciously release yourself to the moment and your breath.

You are now in corpse pose! Congratulations!

(7) Stay in savasana as long as you like.

(8) When you are done, rise gently with a cleansing breath.

Tip: Sometimes I set an alarm so that I don't have to worry about resting too long (or not long enough). Do this if it won't distract you or cause worry.

Happy posing!
