Is Kundalini Yoga dangerous?

Posted by Sat Kriya Kaur on October 31, 2009

Is Kundalini Yoga dangerous? I've heard this question many times. Unfortunately, it is a common misconception. As someone who was unfamiliar with Kundalini Yoga & Meditation before I started practicing, I can understand the concern.

We do raise our Kundalini (creative energy within), but we do it in a safe, methodological way. The Kriyas (sets) are part of a sacred science, as taught by Yogi Bhajan. He is the Master of Kundalini Yoga. He brought this amazing form of Yoga to the US from India (where he learned it from his teacher, Guru Nanak, from the time he was a young boy; he became a Master when he was only 16 years old) in 1969. The Kriyas that we do are taught as they have always been. They are an ancient tradition and I do not change them. As a teacher, I must not sway from the sequence of each Kriya. The only change (allowed/that I sometimes make) is a minor adjustment to the time that we do specific asanas (postures) within the Kriyas.

When asked about this exact concern, Yogi Bhajan said, "it's unfortunate some people talk that way...many of them have not had any real experience of it. The truth is Kundalini Yoga produces whole human beings, teachers and yogis. A yogi is one who has a union with the supreme consciousness. To teach yoga you must have sufficient experience and practical knowledge of the technology. There is never a problem with Kundalini Yoga as the original sacred science."

I have been practicing & studying this form of Yoga for several years and it is THE BEST thing I have ever done for myself, both physically & mentally. That is why I teach it. I truly want to share it with everyone.

Sat Nam. Peace. Blessings.
