Kundalini Yoga - What is it & why do I teach it?

Posted by on October 28, 2009

Kundalini Yoga is the Yoga of Awareness. It uses movement (asana), sound current (mantra), breath (pranayam) and meditation to relax and heal your mind and body, allowing the spirit to flow freely. This powerful and effective form of Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, PhD., Master of Kundalini Yoga, is a wonderful way to de-stress, recharge and heal your body quickly.

Kundalini Yoga is about what YOUR BODY & MIND CAN DO. It's not about how flexible you are, if you can touch your toes, or hold a posture for five minutes. We focus on the breath in conjunction with the rhythm of the asana. Each Kriya (set) is done to help you in different ways. For example, there are Kriyas for: Conquering Sleep, Relieving Inner Anger, & Building Disease Resistance. There are some Kriyas that focus on certain Chakras (energy centers) in your body. Some are more physical, some are more meditative and/or focused on your breathing. It varies from class to class. NO previous yoga or meditation experience is required. There is no age limit. I have practiced with men & women in their 70's! Age, shape, nor size matter. Just join in this beautiful practice and do your best!

I teach Kundalini Yoga because I absolutely LOVE it. I went to the Grand Opening of a yoga studio (in NYC), practiced for literally 15 minutes and that was it. I GOT IT.  I knew this was for me. These teachings have truly saved my life. I live each day through them and want to share them with everyone I encounter. I feel blessed to be an instrument through which Yogi Bhajan's teachings can be shared.

Many of my new students have told me that they have been searching for Kundalini Yoga in this area for many years. It appears that I am the only Kundalini Yoga teacher in the Albany area and because my students have responded so positively, I am hopeful to share these teachings with many more yogis.

Peace to all,
Sat Kriya Kaur
