This six-week series introduces the techniques of the yoga postures and breath work for anyone brand new to yoga *as well as* anyone who’s been doing it for some time and looking to build a solid foundation for their own personal practice, which may include a home practice.

We’ll go over the fundamentals of hatha yoga, including alignment, breathing, and relaxation techniques. The classes build on each other and are neutral in “style”, but will touch on principles from major schools of yoga, so that you can take what you learn and go anywhere and do any yoga class with confidence.

Details:

+ The room will be at a comfortable temperature for us to work, but not scorching hot, please dress accordingly. You won’t need to take a shower afterwards (a shower beforehand, however, is not discouraged).
+ Wear anything that doesn’t restrict your movement and allows you to move freely, and also conforms to your body. Keep in mind the Yoga version of Murphy’s Law: “If it’s possible to reveal too much, it *will* reveal too much”.
+ Straps and blocks will be provided (If the idea of straps and blocks gives you… well, weird ideas, rest assured they will be used for good, not evil.)
+ Mats are available for rent
+ This is *not* hot yoga, so you won’t need to bring a month’s supply of liquid, but it’s always a good idea to be well hydrated.
+ Plan on taking your socks off.
+ A sense of humor is highly encouraged.

Class outline

Week 1 – Lateral Standing Postures
Week 2 – Sagittal Standing Postures
Week 3 – Balance & Backbends
Week 4 – Forward Bends & Restorative
Week 5 – Semi-Inversions
Week 6 – Twists

Topics include:

+ Benefits and characteristics of each type of posture
+ Principles of movement and alignment in major styles of yoga
+ Yoga breathing techniques
+ Precautions and common errors
+ Transitioning between poses
+ And of course, Everything You’ve Ever Wanted To Know About Yoga But Were Afraid to Ask (to which I may or may not have the answer)

I'm looking forward to hearing from you! If you have any questions about the class, please email nikki@nikkiyoga.com.

  • "Yoga Explained in Layman's Term"

Review of Nikki Chau, October 30, 2009

Nikki came to our "Learn Something New Fridays" and taught us Yoga for Geeks. She was able to help us get a better understanding of yoga in regular speak. I've been to a couple yoga classes and sometimes you can get lost in the jargon, but not with Nikki. After doing several different poses (from my chair) -- I came out of the class with 3 poses I can use during my work day from my chair. What more can you ask for?

  • "Great for the analytical thinker"

Review of Nikki Chau, October 30, 2009

Yoga can seem so existential and "new age," which can seem a bit absurd to cynical types, but Nikki blows past all that and gets right to the reasoning behind the techniques and poses. That's not to say it's boring or confusing; Nikki explains things in an easy-going way, never intimidating.
